Wilma or “Granny Wil” as she was called by her beloved grandchildren and great- grandchildren graduated as Valedictorian of her class from Desdemona in 1954. She married the love of her life, Melvin Wayne Iley on October 9, 1954. The wedding was a double ring ceremony at the preacher’s home with her best friend Georgia Ann Burleson and Wayne’s brother the late Howard Iley. They were married almost 70 years and resided near Desdemona for most of her life. Together, they raised two wonderful sons. She was a Christian, a woman of deep faith and a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church near Gorman.
Wilma had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit and always liked to stay busy. Even while sitting, she would be knitting or crocheting. She was a wonderful homemaker, liked to sew and was an excellent cook, well known for her famous peanut brittle. She never wanted the good Lord’s provision to go to waste so when they had a very productive garden or orchard, she would freeze, can, dehydrate, or do whatever it took to preserve the good Lord’s blessings. If you knew her for 5 minutes, you would know she loved the Lord. She had a joy that was evident to all and could be heard thanking Him daily for His blessings. She will be missed dearly on this Earth but is in the precious presence of Jesus now. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
She loved her family deeply and is survived by her loving husband Wayne, her son Richard Iley and his wife Sharon, her grandchildren Matthew Iley and wife Brandi of DeLeon, Kimberly Iley Porter and husband Kelvin of Stephenville, Gary Iley and wife Anna Beth of Bluff Dale, Chad Iley and wife Haley of Glen Rose, and great-grandchildren, Kelton Tate & Easton James Iley, Kendal Wayne, Tucker Dene and Lucas Clay Iley, Calvin Thomas, Layton Joel & Hunter Cohen Iley, Hoyt Wayne Porter and Emma Huffman Winton. Extended family are Misty Simcik with daughters Kayla and Cate Miller and Stephanie Starkey with sons Wyatt and Hunter Starkey.
Wilma is preceded in death by her son Phillip Dwayne Iley, grandson Brian Kendal Iley, brother Matthew Davis Jr., sisters Helen Prophet and Ruth Haley and both of her parents.
