James Howard Shane Jr.

James ‘Jim’ Howard Shane Jr., 91, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, at his home in Eastland, Texas. He was born on October 1, 1934, in Dallas, Texas, to Dr. James Howard Shane Sr. and Catharine Willyard. Growing up he enjoyed many summers vacationing in his mother’s home town of Kasson, Minnesota. Upon graduating high school from Highland Park High School in Dallas, Jim attended the University of Texas before deciding to pause school and serve his country by joining the US Army. After an honorable discharge from the Army in 1962 he completed his Bachelor of Business Administration at North Texas State University.

Jim remained in Denton after college and worked many years for the local newspaper, the Denton Record Chronicle, eventually being promoted to Advertising Manager. He served as president of Texas Daily Newspaper Advertising Managers Association and as president of the Denton, Texas Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Jim married his first wife Sarah Lynn whom he met playing golf on the NTSU golf course while attending college in the early 1960s. After her tragic passing a few years later he remarried to Edith ‘Nell’ Shane. Jim enjoyed travelling with an RV cross country, hunting, fishing and collecting WW II memorabilia. After taking an early retirement from the Record Chronicle at age 55 he and Nell moved to Eastland, Texas where they spent many happy years together before her passing in 2025.

Jim is survived by his son, Dr. James Howard Shane III and wife, Yodit, of Austin; his daughter, Sarah Shane-Kellum and husband, Matthew Kellum, of Dallas; brother Dr. Michael D. Shane and wife Janet of Santa Rosa, California; and grandchildren, Bryson, Devan, Oliver, Bethanya, Ryleigh, and Endreyas, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jim is preceded in death by both of his parents, his first wife, Sarah Lynn Leister, of Orange, Texas, and second wife Edith ‘Nell’ Lunell Allen of Desdemona, Texas.

Jim will be laid to rest in the columbarium of Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas.
